Forensic Trail of a Grand Banquet appears to be an endless expanse of outer space in which stellar clusters, planets, asteroids and nebulae float. These moving celestial bodies occasionally drift towards viewers in a collision course drawing them into parallel worlds of perception—“a meteoric vortex” as one curator calls it. It slowly becomes evident that the flying forms, which can equally invoke cellular processes or moving micro-organisms, are in fact X-ray images of numerous food types. The cosmic view the artist presents is thus a mysterious floating banquet of nourishment. Here, as in works such as Epilogue (2010-11), Kallat inscribes the fundamental human impulse for sustenance and life into an image that invokes the eternal rhythms of the cosmos.
